The Archive of the Unknowable began as the passion project of a single person: An Abyssal named Echo. Like many Abyssals, she was fascinated with mystery and the unknown. Unlike most Abyssals, she began to devote her life to cataloguing and collecting the strange, arcane, and otherwise spooky in the depths of Noct Stratum. This collection, originally called PLACEHOLDER, never got off of the seafloor due to Thalassan disinterest in their work.

Following the intervention of an anonymous donor, the newly renamed Archive of the Unknowable became an explosive success. Operations eventually expanded beyond the trenches, beyond Pelagia, and into a brand new space station. The Archive now operates on an interplanetary scale.

The Archive keeps a small staff, employing several famous quirky researchers. Subjects of study vary from anomalous locations, cursed objects, to various supernatural happenings. If there’s an element of the unknown, the Archive may take interest. As a group, the Archive is fickle, and will not work on behalf of others without good reason

Artemesia is a [[Lepterans|Lepteran]] of average height. Her dark magenta hair is long and unruly, falling past her hips. She has a fluffy coat of green fur, and a collar of thicker yellow fur around her neck. Her carapace extremities are also yellow. Artemisia has 4 pink eyes that, unusually, glow in the dark. Two yellow antennae poke from her hairline. She has striped yellow markings between her primary eyes.

Artemisia usually wears a dark blue jumpsuit with pink stripes and a frankly ridiculous amount of green belts, along with a pair of fingerless gloves. She seems to favor boxy clothes. As is common among Lepterans, she usually forgoes shoes altogether.

Artemisia’s face is usually scrunched in worry. She is rarely seen smiling. When she doesn't think anyone is watching her, she might stop blinking.

Sometimes literally crawling up walls to escape social situations.

Despite her social awkwardness, she seems to be a good archivist. Her anxiety seems to vanish when she’s asked a question about a topic she is knowledgeable about. She will confidently and kindly explain what she knows, but will probably start babbling on awkwardly if the topic changes.

Artemisia usually wears a dark blue jumpsuit with pink stripes and a frankly ridiculous amount of green belts, along with a pair of fingerless gloves. She seems to favor boxy clothes. As is common among Lepterans, she usually forgoes shoes altogether.

Artemisia’s face is usually scrunched in worry. She is rarely seen smiling. When she doesn't think anyone is watching her, she might stop blinking.

Artemesia seems allergic to telling anyone about where she’s from or her early life, but she’s consistent about two things:

# She’s from Chitara, her species' homeworld. She has no interest in going back.
# She’s been working with the Archive for a while, directly under Echo as her archival assistant.

Artemesia will dance around any other attempts to talk about her past, but she has let slip that she used to work for a major media corporation on Chitara a while back.

Artemesia is a fundamentally anxious person. She constantly stumbles over her words and introjects over herself. She‘s friendly and surprisingly outgoing, but she starts more conversations than she can finish, often making an excuse and bailing after she feels like she messed up. Sometimes literally crawling up walls to escape social situations.

Despite her social awkwardness, she seems to be a good archivist. Her anxiety seems to vanish when she’s asked a question about a topic she is knowledgeable about. She will confidently and kindly explain what she knows, but will probably start babbling on awkwardly if the topic changes.

Echo is Artemesia’s boss at the archive. Artemesia respects her immensely, referring to her as “boss” even when she’s not present. She is extremely dutiful in her role as an assistant, and they spend a lot of time together, but it doesn’t look like they are exactly “friends.” Neither of them seem to be entirely comfortable around the other.

Lepterans and Carcids are unique among other species that share planets as they have developed a symbiotic society. As such, many cultural elements are shared between species.

== Physiology and Design ==

Lepterans are bipedal aliens with mammalian and insectoid traits. They are covered in soft fur that is chitinous instead of keratinous like humans.

They have keen senses, 2-8 compound eyes, large ears, and robust antennae. These antennae enhance their sense of smell and are also used to sense proximity in a manner akin to whiskers. Their muscular structures are built for climbing, and so are their clawed hands and feet.

Lepterans tend to be on the shorter side, 3’9 to 5’5. They tend to live until around their sixties, but artificially increase their lifespan to live well into their hundreds.

Similar to Carcids, they are known for being extremely adaptable, however they more often have a better ''mental'' fortitude because of their work environment.

Occupations are often dependent on what guild you are in. Guilds are always evolving, and the amount of guilds in Hive City grows and grows with each day. However there is a place at the top.

Chitaran Society tends to shuffle Lepterans into bureaucratic jobs and Carcids into manual labor. Stereotypical Lepteran jobs consist of a lot of dexterous, office and research-based work. Examples are desk jockeys, engineers, architects, accountants etc.
