Rox is our first character we've made for the SMP.

Rox is a curious Lepteran, that works for UNITE. They're a scientist, here for a 'vacation' from the chaotic work they do in the lab and with the higher ups at UNITE. Seen a lot, done a lot, needs a break.

Primarily here just to have fun.

Appearance

Rox's appearance is primarily based off of an Oakworm moth. They have yellow orange-ish skin, sharp straight nose, 4 eyes: 2 big bug eyes and 2 smaller ones just above it near the nose. They wear square framed golden glasses, have a chip in their right ear from a childhood accident with their brother.

They have dark brown hair, yellow fluffy moth antenna on the top of their head, and have like bug ears?? As well as they have a scruffy almost goatee type of beard.

They wear a muted red sweater with a button up underneath, with a lab coat overtop of it all. Under their lab coat but above their sweater is a burnt orange long sweater they wear sometimes. Their pants are dark brown long ribbed flowy pants, almost looking like a skirt at times. They wear regular sneakers that are the same color as their burnt orange sweater!

Personality

Rox tends to keep to themselves. (Though we may forget to mute our mic in game.)

They're curious to a fault, they want to know information, see things, learn. They LOVE learning.

Most Anxious coffee ridden smart person.

Rox is incredibly socially awkward. It’s gotten better but they’re a bit of a shut in :)

Early Life

I think Rox is one of those kids who you’re worried about when they go quiet. The issue is, they’re always quiet. So if you can’t see em, they might be lighting something on fire or playing with chemicals. Rox as a child has always been a very ‘keep to themselves’ kinda kid, if they ever struggled with something they try their fucking hardest to keep it a secret, which follows into their adult life now. Their parents would believe everything is fine, focusing more on Rox’s siblings than them because Rox never seemed to have issues. Every time teachers or adults would inform their parents that Rox is indeed struggling, all they’d do is point to Rox’s excellent behavior and grades and say there’s nothing wrong, and then go on discussing about an actual “problem child” who isn’t actually an issue, just expressed their struggles more.

Rox further in life would start to express the fact they do struggle with things, even going so far as to ask for help, but it is rare and they are rather quiet. Finding out that they are trans somewhere around middle school, and fully socially transitioning in high school.

they liked the quiet, underground nature of UNITE, and it allows them to pursue their interests that they’ve always had: Science.

The Deep Lore

Something happens that changes your character forever...

Rox, after their struggling in high school socially, excelled in scientific areas. They won many many science fairs, and even toured some science centers. UNITED had their eye on Rox for quite a long time.

Rox even excelled in science when they were in college, they did intern work, they were usually top of their class, and wanted to specifically study Biology.

Rox would sometimes share classes with [REDACTED], and was a big fan of Bluebell's written works but never really interacted with much outside of professors and other top rated students, still preferring to keep to themselves.

After College, Rox starts applying for positions, jobs, internships, anything. They apply for UNITE, who.. seem to be almost without hesitation, accepts and Rox starts working for UNITE, the well known science division of The Hive.

Rox meets their partner, [REDACTED]. Who they seem to get along with quite well! The two work tirelessly on their biology assignments and documentation. Rox seems to show a great interest and curiosity towards the RAID, which secretly, UNITE was already working on trying to harness and use the RAID in ways to either combat it or use it to help better society.

Rox, after around 3 years of working for UNITE, eventually gets proper clearance to start working on making strains of the RAID for UNITE. Them and Their partner, again, work tirelessly, trying anything they can imagine, day in and day out, long endless days at the lab, Rox would sometimes sleep at the office.

Until they do it.

They succeed.

They make a working strain.

THE AMBROSIA STRAIN

The two rush to continue testing, to continue to see if they can replicate their findings and.. they can. After MONTHS of endless, sleepless nights, diligent, determined nights; the two managed to do it.

The two rush to find a higher up, schedule a meeting, Rox and [REDACTED] are in and out of meetings, over and over, so much it'll make your head spin. [REDACTED] always handled people better.

Rox has never been more proud, so proud of the curiosity and their brain being useful, this was the win they needed. This is exactly what they wanted and, by god they would never want to stop. This life, the lab, the knowledge, the endless things they could experiment with, it was vast and unknowable and by god will they be the one to know it. They wish so desperately to become so intimately close with the unknowable that it becomes known. Known to them. Used by them.

Rox and [REDACTED] start prepping for the demonstration that the higher ups asked for, to see it in its true form, to show them it really truly works. This is THEIR moment, THEIR chance to help change the world.

There had been talks about needing a Chitaran volunteer, a live humanoid subject for this demonstration. The deadline is closing in, they're running out of time for one to show up. Of course no one would want to be a live experiment. But this is their life's work, their chance.

[REDACTED] walks into the room and states that they're still in need of a volunteer.

Rox states "UNITED will find a volunteer. That's not their area of expertise."

"I.. I know Rox, but, I offered to be the subject!"

Rox dropped the beaker they were handling on the floor. "It'll completely change you [REDACTED]! You can't, YOU KNOW YOU CAN'T"

"I know it'll change me but I want to be just as committed to this project as you are! YOU SLEEP IN HERE."

"YOU ARE COMMITTED TO THIS PROJECT [REDACTED]! YOU HELPED ME SO MUCH! Without you would've NEVER been able to make it in the first place!"

"That's not true! It would've just taken you a little longer!"

"We don't know that for sure!"

"WHY WON'T YOU JUST LET ME DO MY PART ROX?"

"BECAUSE I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU!"

A silence clung to the air, so tightly that you could feel it against your bones.

"So.. no. I won't let you be the volunteer, end of story. You.. mean too much to me. You're my best friend."

".. got it. ..... I got a meeting in a couple minutes.. i'll uh... talk to ya later." [REDACTED] grabbed their bag and walked away, awkwardness hanging in the air.

Rox walked them walk away, hoping, pleading, begging it was enough. That their mind is changed, that maybe the two can truly stay like this forever.

Fate is not that kind.

At a random meeting, UNITE states that they have found them a volunteer. [REDACTED] is more than pleased and, Rox's mind is at ease, focusing on making sure the strain is really ready to go.

Days turn to hours, turn into seconds before the demonstration.

The two made sure everything was ready to go a couple days prior, and it seems [REDACTED] had gotten sick. Rox wasn't too broken up about it, the two of them have been stressing themselves over this demonstration for WEEKS. So, the body does truly take a toll.

Rox, specifically choosing to have never met the volunteer because they didn't want to feel bad for doing this to someone. This will weigh hard enough on their conscience, knowing them will only make it worse.

Rox welcomed the group of shareholders, sponsors, ceo's, and many other higher more powerful people than Rox.

"Welcome! Welcome all. This is the first official demonstration for the NEW RAID STRAINS! Something me and my lovely lab partner: [REDACTED] have been working on for quite some time. This strain is the AMBROSIA STRAIN! Now lets meet our volunteer!" Rox smiled gleefully, as they turned around and clapped as they watched [REDACTED] walk into the test chamber.

Rox stares at them, stunned, mortified, feeling a wash of betrayal, guilt, regret, a feeling of not being enough. Was life with Rox not enough for [REDACTED]?

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THERE?!"

"I told you, I volunteered"

"YOU TOLD ME YOU DIDN'T, THAT THEY FOUND SOMEONE ELSE!"

"I never said that Rox, I just.. knew you wouldn't have let this happen if I said something. This is what I want"

"HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT I WANT??"

"Rox not now, we can discuss it later."

"YOU KNOW WE CAN'T!!"

"Rox. Please. Continue. This is what I want."

"No. No I won't."

"Yes, Please, It's what I want. I want to see this to completion. For us, to see it to completion."

Rox grit their teeth, and huffed.

"This is.. [REDACTED] Our wonderful volunteer. They will now allow the strain to begin its mutation." Rox, sighed, with nothing but utter defeat in their voice.

Staring at her as the mutation took over, as she turned into a giant.. dog.. like dragon looking monster. Truly nothing more than a beast. Screaming, sobs, cries of agony and pain filled and echoed in that chamber. Rox still hears it in their nightmares. They feel tears start to well up in their eyes, in that moment realizing they have lost the one person they truly loved, who understood them on so many levels; only for them to hold the tears back.

Rox continues with the demonstration. Finishing it because there's truly no going back. There's no undo button, there's no FIXING this. Going through the motions, truly seeing her face in this monster Rox has created.

After the demonstration Rox sits in that test chamber and stares at their best friend, their partner, wondering where they went wrong. There is beauty in this form; but the beautiful parts of them are gone. Nothing but a physical husk left.

Raeya is gone.

Rox is praised for the successful demonstration and encouraged to continue, so they do. They work and work and work, throwing themself into it, hoping and begging that ache in the back of their mind will go away.

Eventually Rox becomes apart of that crowd of shareholders, sponsors, ceo's, and higher more powerful people, watching some demonstrations themselves, from younger scientists. Mentoring them and helping to create 2 new strains.

Endless working.

Until they decided they've had enough.

Locus Astra

Rox notices a chance to leave, a break, a vacation, a chance to breathe.

They take it.

Getting on the ship to the Locus Astra in search for a 'vacation'

CUBE, did not like that decision.

Relationships

Rox's and [REDACTED]'s relationship can truly be summed up by the word "close". The two were set as partners when they first arrived at UNITE, both working towards the same goal. Similar backgrounds, similar ages, both had so much energy and life in their eyes! Truly remarkable what the two of them could do when they put their minds to it.

— Fig

Rox originally met Fig on Chitara under very different circumstances. They were another Raid Strain Experiment, a Failed one, The first one to die. Rox assumed they were dead until.. well.. They saw them on the Locus Astra. They tried following them but it didn’t work, Rox ran off until they found a place to settle. Getting swarmed by mobs, Fig stepped in to save them, protecting Rox from the monsters and then even helping Rox dig out a place to live. Fig ended up moving in with Rox, living in the upstairs part of their house while Rox lives in the below part.

Fig and Rox have only gotten closer. Rox KNOWS Fig is that dead experiment, and when Fig asked about it Rox answered honestly about Fig’s past. Hoping and begging it wouldn’t change their relationship and it didn’t, it truly just made them trust the other even more. Rox views Fig with admiration and a step in the right direction, hoping to right their wrongs and to help Fig figure themselves out.

Fig actively dotes on Rox, especially since Rox does not take care of themselves much. Fig makes Rox lunch, takes them home or to bed when they’re drunk, and talks to them about the current situations happening on the Locus Astra. The two are extremely close. Fig means quite a lot to Rox.

—Orbit (Voranj)

Rox ran into the guy or.. something similar on Chitara. Only for Rox to run into them on their first day on the Locus Astra as well. Rox was rather intrigued about them and was very happy when they met them a little further into their exploration and travels, Orbit now able to hold a conversation, the two started chatting. Orbit has been extremely helpful in Rox’s quick acceptance of the Locus Astra and all of its new things to explore.

Rox is able to read and write the language Orbit, and the other Voices / Sculk Believers are able to speak as well. Rox studied it in College, the language was thought to be dead. Thus when Orbit or any other Sculk Voice chose to write in the language, they would take it upon themselves to translate it for others. Happy to put their knowledge to good use.

Rox is currently Orbit’s caretaker. When all pathfinders were informed to cease anything having to do with the Sculk, Orbit became agitated and his hunger only grew, causing him to starve, struggling and eating anything he could for knowledge to satiate himself, Rox found him and calmed him, taking him home and working on finding a solution. Rox and Fig have been very active in Orbit’s life, almost parents of the sort. With the help of others, Rox has currently found a decent solution in regards to Orbit’s hunger.

Rox has even become somewhat of an advisor for Orbit. Learning from him and speaking for him when he cannot. Advocating for his autonomy and individuality. The two are currently trying to peacefully work with the Sculk civilization to hopefully find a solution for Orbit without taking away his autonomy and sense of self. Rox is a really important person in Orbit’s life, and Orbit means so much to Rox. The two are extremely close.

— Euna

Rox ended up meeting Euna after traveling to The Anchor to get some charcoal. Euna showed Rox around the Anchor, most importantly the store house and where to find certain things. During this time, the two honestly were having the most AWKWARD conversations known to Lepteran kind. Euna introduced herself at the start and by the end, Rox almost forgot to introduce themselves, when they did Euna pressed for a last name and Rox gave it, regrettably. Most unfortunately, Euna has worked for Oakworm Banking and Rox was just praying they didn’t get recognized. They didn’t and the two just, chatted about how they’re both happy to be away from the corporate world.

Euna and Rox continue to be acquainted but never closer, due to both of their own specific reasons. The two are extremely friendly and seem to enjoy each other's company, finding solace in knowing the other has also suffered at the hands of Chitara and its Corporate world, knowing the other will always understand their plight. Rox seems to be a very valuable resource and person to the Mayor and her Assistant Mercutio, and Rox hopes they can continue to be useful in the future.

Euna recently has asked Rox with some scientific research regarding some old pieces of paper from around the sculk or even before it. This is still an ongoing investigation and Rox is extremely excited to be helping Euna, especially with all of the things she’s been through and had to deal with on the Locus Astra alone. Studying a piece of paper for her is nothing.

— Mercutio

Mercutio, the Mayor’s invaluable Assistant. He kept hearing of Rox’s endeavors, their ability to speak a dead language, as well as their scientific talents. He requested Rox for a meeting and asked some questions, slightly invasive questions but.. overall just vague small talk questions. In turn Mercutio showed Rox his magical research. He handed Rox a bottle of red wine as a parting gift, which was quite delicious.

Rox, when wanting to start studying the magical mysteries of the Locus Astra, they could think of no one else to ask but Mercutio to teach them. She got Rox all set up and ready to go off on their own studies, even allowing them to take some of their precious resources to get them started. Rox feels like they owe Mercutio for such a thing but, he continues to tell them or.. show them that they do not owe her anything.

Unfortunately during this magical studies discussion, Rox found out a horrifying fact about her. She’s actively fusing with her Metal Frame. He has to take drugs in order to not feel utterly terrible all the time, which sounds horrific to Rox. They offered help and sympathies, if Mercutio were to ever need help with such a thing they would certainly try. Mercutio denied, as she often does when it comes to any form of help from another person it feels like; and just like last time, handed Rox a bottle of whiskey and sent them on their way home.

Rox and Mercutio had some other minor meetings. One to discuss some rumors Rox ended up hearing. One was where Rox invited Mercutio over to help summon a personal crushing spirit, of which she did with no real cost to Rox. One meeting to discuss what Rox has learned from the Sculk science team, knowing happily that they seem to be getting along with others and peacefully learning. During this specific meeting, Mercutio asked about their previous employment, Knowing that Rox used to work for UNITE, and asking about it. Rox gave as little info as possible, but did slip that they do more than just bioengineer plants.

Rox eventually teaches Mercutio Enchanting Table or, the Galactic Alphabet. Only to be interrupted by a couple of thieving kids trying to claim the Anchor. These kids ended up being harmless but Rox did help Mercutio hold one of them over night. Feeling bad that the poor thing didn’t even get a window.

Currently Mercutio and Rox seem to have no other matters to truly discuss besides mere opinions on the current state of the Locus Astra; Specifically of Orbit, The Sculk, floating rumors, Parties or any particular happenings on the Locus Astra.

Rox views Mercutio as truly invaluable, but is still rather nervous about how he does or says certain things. Thinking it’s usually just a matter of a difference in personality typically. Rox greatly appreciates Mercutio and everything he’s done for them.

— Isabella

Rox ended up meeting Isabella actually through the pagers, the text chat (in-character discord chat.) that they have access to. Rox ended translating some of Orbit's sentences and Isabella was extremely interested. The two met up and Rox even brought Fig along. Fig walked around curiously as the two discussed the language and had some cigarettes and wine together. Ultimately, Isabella ended up getting sick, so Rox and Fig headed home.

Rox came over to spend some decompression time with Isabella, the two ate lunch, walked around the anchor and generally had a wonderful time together. It was basically a date, so I won’t go too much into it. But Rox stayed the night at Isabella’s.

Rox greatly enjoys Isabella’s presence, and Isabella has definitely opened a door for Rox that they are unsure if they will ever open again, the only reason they would think about it is because of how receptive and attentive Isabella was during such an intimate moment that Rox had never experienced before.

For now, Rox is appreciative of Isabella’s gentle and kind nature without needing such interactions to be an exchange of.. really anything other than the other’s presence.

— Jelly

Met Jelly at the tavern in the Anchor, truly just wanted a nicer, fruitier drink, like they’d have back at home. Jelly clearly seemed suspicious of Rox but that just, makes sense. The two ended up talking a bit about their drink and Jelly seemed to get more uncomfortable the longer they spoke, Rox mentioning their name and that they’re a scientist from Chitara really seemed to make them uncomfortable. Rox and Jelly went to shake hands and did so, Rox instantly noticing the specific type of skin they had, the texture, the feeling, and recognized what Jelly is. Jelly and Rox ended up staring at each other before Rox stated “You should really get some lotion or people are going to start to notice.” and then left. [Weary of them, but is willing to help them any way possible, if they are willing.]
