"If we cannot evolve further, then we have failed." — Sage Hermelin

Saurans are a reptile-like species that exists solely on the planet of Sauris. They are known for higher average strength, resilience, and strong immune systems to disease.The species is bipedal and prominently features scales on their body, every Sauran enjoys meat as apart of their diet, yet they are able to eat any food they please. The Saurans are divided into four sub Sauran species;

  • The Hydrans Are a more amphibious species that enjoy living alongside the coastside of more humid areas, however more airy ones are suitable as well. Hydrans are friendly yet quiet amongst the other Saurans, on Sauris they have an incredibly healthy relationship with the Sylvans. Hydrans also enjoy giving gems to one another as a sign of affection for one another. The Hydrans were the primary force behind most of the science on the Sauran's ability to space travel.
  • The Sylvans Are a more agile species that lives in Forests and enjoys living in the trees on houses raised above the ground. The Sylvans are incredibly diplomatic despite their intense strength when it comes to gathering food. Sylvans are soft spoken as well and have good relations with every Sauran species. The Sylvans were the ones to invent the 'glider', a way for them to utilize the height they gain from enhanced climbing abilities.
  • The Solisers Are a species that thrives in warmer climates, the Solisers live together in small communities. Solisers very much enjoy the families they are apart of, as the social stigma is to only have 1-2 children in your household. The Solisers are naturally 'grumpy' towards others, which can appear to some as threatening or hostility. The Solisers have a bad relationship with the Dracoliths and are neutral towards the other two. The Solisers invented the communicators that all four species utilize, able to send messages across Sauris in an instant.
  • The Dracoliths Are a species that thrives in even warmer climates, to others it can seem almost 'melting'. Dracoliths are incredibly loud and friendly with everyone, even if it can seem mocking it comes from a place of genuinity. Dracoliths function off of power and strength in their society, with the strongest families living in one of the two volcanoes on Sauris. Dracoliths enjoy community the most, sharing being something they are fond with. Despite appearing like brutes, the Dracoliths were the ones who started a proper unified economy amongst Sauris and are the spearheads of it.

Core Worldview

The Sauran’s outlook on the rest of the universe as a whole is to find if there is more out there than just them. The Saurans on their own are happy as a people to live in solitude but all of them want to know if there is anyone else they can help with their strengths and inventions. Saurans are naturally not hostile to the idea of having others live with them if need be, despite the Soliser’s angst even they view peacefulness as the only solution. They seek evolution and exploration above all else, maybe another species can force them.

Sauris is divided into three continents, Rritja e tepërt, Ngrohtësia Apex, and Ngrohtësia  Zenith. Long ago Ngrohtësia used to be joined but split due to tectonic plate shifting; thus birthing the new ocean of Genesis. Ngrohtësia is a more arid continent, featuring a volcano on each side and sprawling deserts. Rritja e tepërt is a more polarizing continent, featuring lush forests, sprawling plains, and excessive flora and fauna. Three moons surround Sauris; Philemon, Nyarlathotep, and Nyx.

Physiology and Design

Saurans are scale-ridden bipedal reptile creatures. They feature silted eyes, smooth heads, and tails that vary from species to species. Saurans all have more humanoid hands that feature sharp claws at the end and have webbed feet amongst all of them. Saurans range in scale color, these colors are not locked to the sub-species. Sauran common colors range from a dark green, muddled yellows, charred black, and even a lightish red. They typically tend to live twice as long as a human would.

Each sub-species features small adaptations to them based on environments, upbringings, and lifestyles.

  • Sylvans have more dexterous and rough clawed hands due to their frequent climbing on Sauris’ forest trees. Sylvans are also incredibly proficient at camouflaging themselves amongst forestry, making them exceptional hunters. Sylvan tails are long and slender to help them balance when climbing. Sylvans are considerably the shortest.
  • Hydrans feature fins on the back of their scaly bodies which assist in swimming quite faster. Also including larger lungs internally, which allow them to hold their breath for longer periods. Hydrans’ eyes include lenses that allow them to see underwater more efficiently even past murky waters. Hydran tails are short and skinny to help reduce drag in the water.
  • Solisers are heat-resistant and their scales are considerably rougher than the other Sauran species. Soliser’s scales are more shell adjacent and work at protecting their bodies significantly more efficiently than the other Saurans. Solisers eyes are scotopic which allows them to see better in more dim and dark areas. Soliser tails are large and spiky featuring fins alongside it, which works to help fan off themselves as to not overheat.
  • Dracoliths are extraordinarily heat-resistant, able to withstand volcanic temperatures. Their scales are resilient and their natural larger size allows them to assert themselves easier. Dracoliths tails are short and stubby as tails give you no tactical advantage whatsoever. Dracoliths are considerably the tallest of the Saurans.

Social Structures and Community

The common social structures amongst the Saurans revolves in tight knit communities that closely resemble cities and towns in both regions, with Ngrohtësia having a bias towards towns. All Saurans live alongside their families, as that is the strongest community there is. Saurans will typically live with their family until they are ready to have a child of their own, which goes for every sub-species. Below will list what is unique about each city and town. Young Saurans will attend schools for their age groups in their own towns and cities, before having to go to Sage Hermelin later in their life.

  • Sylvans have most of their cities in the treelines, however smaller towns that are in more plains areas have no quarrels with living on flat ground. Commonly, when new Sylvan mothers are in late stages they will live on the ground floor even in the city. The newly born Sylvan will also live on the ground level until they learn to properly climb.
  • Hydran cities are commonly found on the coastline of Rritja e tepërt but some live more inland around ponds and rivers. Hydran homes are very open to allow younger Hydrans to slide across floors when wet. The homes utilize tile extensively so the Hydrans can maneuver at peak performance
  • Solisers are more town centric, benefiting from smaller, tight-knit communities. Soliser homes are mostly made out of adobe, a brick made by sun-drying clay. Soliser homes feature many rooms dedicated to sitting and talking with one another. Most homes are made with 3 bedrooms, due to Solsiers mostly having 1-2 children only. Soliser homes also feature vast windows to allow the sun to properly shine through and almost every house features a deck for sunbathing.
  • Dracoliths live exclusively in cities, trying to group near the two volcanoes on Ngrohtësia as close as possible. Dracolith homes are utilized almost exclusively for sleeping and rest, so they’re considerably smaller despite their larger size. Dracolith homes are commonly empty during the day as they enjoy being out in the city and socializing with one another. In the two Volcanos live the most notable and powerful Dracolith families, three in each volcano.

Despite differences in their homes the four all value community and togetherness, in every major city exists a museum of sorts to let other young Saurans (and to a lesser extent, other species) know about their lives in different places.

Religion and Spirituality

The Saurans do not have a God or religion in the traditional sense, as they are more focused on scientific reasonings as explanations for things. When Saurans die, it is common practice that their body is to be donated towards scientific inquiry. The Nullstar to the Saurans is nothing to fear or worship, but rather something of curiosity. The Nullstar is something the Saurans see as a proper step in understanding the wider universe as a whole. Saurans are not obsessed but rather curious and want to understand it to its fullest extent. They understand that traditional means of studying subjects will not work in the case of the Nullstar.

Technology and Science

Saurans are quite advanced in technology despite appearing on paper as ‘brutes.’ The Saurans achieved space travel roughly three decades after The Convergence to study the stars in detail. Saurans themselves do not rely on technology as a species but do not reject it. Saurans have modern-age technology, such as communicators, televisions, and powered vehicles for water and land. However, the Saurans have hit a ‘wall’ so to speak on where to progress from where they are at now, which infuriates the entire species.

Sauran science is quite advanced as well, being especially proficient in biology on themselves and understanding the flora and fauna of Sauris quite exquisitely. Saurans are obsessed with evolution and are always looking to understand how much further they can perfect themselves.

Traditional Clothing and Fashion

Sauran’s fashion changes from species to species, but all enjoy wearing clothes that lack sleeves and show off more of their scales. Saurans are very proud of how far they’ve come from ancestors and like to show it off. It seems the current trend among the youth is to stylize your tail.

  • Sylvans enjoy wearing compressed tops with soft cloth, prioritizing the least intruding fabric to make sure they are able to climb and perform at maximum performance. Sylvans likewise enjoy short breathable bottoms. Their clothing is not gendered so to speak, as both sexes have similar requirements and it’s more efficient to utilize the same clothing. Young Sylvans have taken the trend of painting their tails a unique color, attempting complementary colors to themselves.
  • Hydrans, akin to Sylvans, enjoy wearing tight tops to lessen drag in the water. Hydrans prioritize their fins being free and shown off, as Hydrans are incredibly proud of their bodies. Hydrans like wearing tight leggings as well, to reduce any drag as well. Outside of the water, Hydrans wear lots of jewelry such as necklaces, rings, and especially tiaras decorated with gems. Young Hydrans have decided that their tails are better being held under their arm on the surface, to show off the end of it to others. The youth also enjoys piercing their tails as well.
  • Solisers wear more breathable tops that hang loose off of their larger bodies. They also like to wear baggier pants to keep more heat inside and continue to perpetrate their warmth. Solisers like to wear long, drooping necks in their tops as well. Solisers, young and old, have adopted the idea of markings on their tails and bodies, usually being family symbols or community ones.
  • Dracoliths wear what is considered to be extremely bare clothing, as they are proud of exactly who they are. Dracoliths inside of their homes commonly lose the top and opt to be one with themselves, however they will throw on sleeveless shirts that expose their stomachs slightly. Dracoliths commonly wear pants that feature the bottom hems being cut to let the fabric split on the inner legs. Dracoliths tails, due to their shortness, are commonly less played with overall but Dracoliths like to pierce their tails as well, an idea the older Dracoliths shared with the Hydrans.

Occupations

Saurans all occupy similar jobs with one another, most Saurans work as researchers, agriculture, governance, educators, and builders. They function as a society that works on progress and evolving as one, so everything must serve a purpose. Despite advancements in society the need for more job opportunities has not arisen as much, this instead allows every profession to have as many workers as possible. Occupations on Sauris are viewed as honorable, respectable things to better the entire species. Those who do not work are usually young children, expecting and new mothers, and those who are deceased. Anyone outside of these groups are shamed for not contributing towards the betterment of society.

Starships and Space Travel

Space travel was discovered three decades after the Nullstar was first known to the Saurans, curious to see what else could be out there. Utilizing magmatic rock as fuel and constructing their ships out of the toughest metallic material they could, they ventured into the cosmos. The first activity was to see if it was survivable in the first place. Upon re-entry, the Saurans immediately got to work understanding space and taking precautions. Within a decade, a Sauran was already back in space to observe one of the three moons, Nyx. Saurans found out there was little use to venture into space and after observing the other two moons, Philemon and Nyarlathotep, they called the space program an overall “waste of time.” However, the theoretical limits continued to be pushed by Sauran scientists and researchers, who slowly began to understand how to properly travel long distances in space.

Due to increasing tourism from other species, the Saurans have decided to move forward with exploration and communication with other species. This moment of decision was a hot debate amongst the world leaders, as it was unknown if they should risk being harmed or harming others. In the end, it was decided to open Sauris completely in the hopes that other species could assist them with struggles they faced. Slowly, the toxic air that plagued Sauris and discouraged others from visiting was worked around, with special suits and walkways designed for those visiting. The most favored planets by Saurans are Virilune and Singulon.

Cultural Quirks and Daily Life

  • Solisers lick their eyes to maintain moisture
  • Sylvan tails are sometimes used to act as a ‘hook’
  • Dracoliths are commonly seen fighting one another as a sign of playfulness
  • Solisers created a “Top 10 best places to sunbathe” list that circulated enough to where it was brought up at Genesis' Gathering and was decided to make it an official list.
    • Since more frequent space travel, there have been numerous debates about whether to include other planets or update the list to 20.
  • Hydrans often have competitions where they race against one another, combining in water movement and out of water parkour.
    • This is known as "Slither-Swim"
    • Other species have tried to join in but are always left in the dust during the water segments.
  • Sauran schools are considered where a Sauran truly begins to learn how to live and gain understanding.

Notable Locations

A drawn map of Sauris. This map was drawn at Genesis' Gathering by the Hydran representative's daughter.
  • The Apex Volcano is a volcano located on Ngrohtësia Apex. It was formed when Ngrohtësia was still one continent. This volcano is home to three Dracolith families and provides magmatic rock for Sauris. This was where it was discovered the energetic power of the magmatic rocks.
  • The Zenith Volcano is a volcano located on Ngrohtësia Zenith. It was formed when Ngrohtësia was still one continent. This volcano is home to three Dracolith families and acts as the central government building for all of Sauris. This is where the economy is also sorted out, being done entirely by Dracoliths. Genesis’ Gathering is a building on an island in the Genesis ocean. The building acts as a meeting point for the four elected species representatives to discuss ideas, situations, and more that affects the entire species. This is where situations regarding the Nullstar and Locus Astra were discussed. The building itself is a small meeting room that is built for no one specifically, utilizing material from all four and principles that no one likes.
  • Frenhaven is the main city of the Sylvans. The city is out in the plains on Rritja e tepërt, for it to be accessible to everyone and every species who cannot climb to their ability. The city features tall buildings regardless, which allows Sylvans to still scale them to some degree. The city also features many restaurants that utilize experimental changes to common Sauran dishes. S’lathe is the main city of the Hydrans. The city is on the coastline bordering the Cradle ocean and features a bridge that sprawls out towards Ngrohtësia Zenith for easy access. The city is the second largest Sauris city despite featuring less buildings than other cities.
  • Barian is the main, and only, city of the Solisers. Located on Ngrohtësia Apex, the city is notably condensed and features lots of open spaces of tables and bustling restaurants. The city is full of Solisers who all treat one another like close family, which one can view as forced given how close the city is together.
  • Mauriast is the main city of the Dracoliths. Located on Ngrohtësia Zenith, the city is massive and is the largest city and community on all of Sauris. The city was designed to be a ‘city for all’, and as such sprawls from the volcano all the way to the Cradle ocean. The city is considered the most inventive and successful, being the birthplace of many Sauran inventions, most notably it is where the first rocket was launched.
  • Sage Hermelin Academy is a school located near S’lathe. It houses all four Sauran species and is the only school to finalize education for Saurans. The school is massive and tries to accommodate all four lifestyles to great success. The school has been on Sauris for over 200 years and is named after a Soliser who saved the species with new ideology.

Interactions With Other Species

Besides other species entirely, all Saurans are on good enough terms to work together. Outside of themselves, Saurans have a relatively neutral standpoint on other species, as they do not directly concern themselves.

Interactions With Magic

The Sauran’s relationship with magic is notably considered as “utilized when convenient, otherwise not a useful solution to problems we have already solved.” When magic was first discovered it was a hot ticket and was extensively studied, considered the next evolution in Sauran lifestyles. Instead of this occurring, magic was instead realized to do little to the already technologically advanced society.

Magic is used in place of other devices and safety regulations. Considerably, a restaurant in Mauriast features that all of its meat is cooked with fire magic, which is then utilized to make a spectacle out of the dining experience. Magic is also used to make sure young Sylvans do not injure themselves from a large fall when learning how to climb.

Basic magic is taught to Saurans at Sage Hermelin’s school, in case magic becomes more relied upon in the future. This teaching was then expedited for those who would be leaving to study the Nullstar and Locus Astra.

Inspiration Images

The main inspiration when going into designing a Sauran is to utilize the Argonians from The Elder Scrolls.
