"You just got CHECKMATED!!!" --average Check Mate
The Check Mates are a band of outlaws that are a general nuisance on Locus Astra, despite not exactly being... a threat. They frequently appear to investigate the Pathfinders' bases and homes, seeking to claim more territory and property in the name of their Queen.
Mission Statement/Principles
The Check Mates seem to be imitating a classic Western band of outlaws, and seek to enact grand plans to steal and claim territory and items in the name of a mysterious entity known as the 'Queen'.
Members
The Check Mates swear there are plenty of them...!
Checkers
Checkers is a Caelune gunslinger who can't actually use a gun very well. They are also proficient in cloth mending and frequently make clothes for their fellow Check Mates. They even made their own poncho!
Blitz
Blitz is a short-statured mouse Lagoran who is the crew's inventor and technician. They also are proficient in cheesemaking! Blitz never goes anywhere without confetti, fireworks, and plenty of cheese (of various kinds).
Virgo (Jester)
Virgo really wants to be called Jester, and keeps trying to get that nickname to stick. So far, it hasn't. Virgo tends to be one of the more responsible and confident members of the team, very self-assured in her actions.
Apotheosis
It's unclear what exactly Apotheosis is, but they're happy to be there regardless. Knowing few words of common language, they still identify as a Check Mate and are more than happy to follow their friends around, 'abducting' animals (and people) with their tractor beam.
The Queen
Whether the Queen is real or not is still up in the air to the Pathfinders, but all of the Check Mates believe in her strongly, and almost fanatically. According to Checker's spiel... "The Queen is our guiding light in darkest times, who heals us when we are sick, who cures us when we are ill, who brings us into the new dawn, who shelters us from the storm-- wait, where are you going?"
History
According to them, they arrived on Locus Astra before the Pathfinding Initiative, but after the HSC sent the Build Bots (outrunners) to construct the initial Anchor. As for how they arrived... 'ship'.

- The Check Mates were created out of a compromise between horsemen who wanted our 'silly villains' group to be cowboy themed and chess themed.
- Team Rocket is a major inspiration for the Check Mates.
