"Everybody loves the soldiers until they come home and stop fighting."
Ray is Euna Caisa's lepteran-carcid hybrid little brother and the second child of Adonis Caisa, birthed by his second wife Agalea Caisa. Once a young, up-and-coming freelance pilot, Ray descended into crime when the Containment of Biological Entities (CUBE) Foundation revoked his and Euna's citizenship.
Climbing the ranks of Chitara's criminal underworld with the sole desire of illegally making Euna a citizen again, Ray eventually achieved his goal at the cost of his capture and was sent to Chitara prison, where he enlisted in the Bulwark Program for a chance of a quicker route to freedom and citizenship.
Upon discovering the program was being cancelled and none of the prisoners were being set free, he attempted an escape that ended in him blowing up Chitara prison. Quickly acting under the false persona of a veteran mercenary named Delta, Ray aims to seek a new, quiet life on Locus Astra, unaware of just how much the world wants him dead.
Appearance
Ray is a stocky, relatively short male with rosy-clay skin and an auburn-chocolate carapace that covers his back and extends down to his two larger arms; which end in large crustacean-like claws. He has two long cockroach-like antennae and a head of thick, messy brown hair that ends at his lower back. His rounded face retains a permanently exhausted expression, paired with a pair of completely black eyes and a mouth that opens like the mandibles of a cockroach, revealing a toothless mouth loaded with smaller claws. He has a chin-strap beard with no mustache and heavy bags under his eyes.
Prologue
Chapter One
Ray was born upon the frozen, desolate planet of Rockston Object of Interest 24 (ROI-24). He was a bloated, hideous hybrid child who writhed and squirmed and screamed and cried all throughout his birth. Yet with bated breath and shuddering hands, his mother cradled her aberration of a boy, and looked at him with nothing but unconditional love.
"Look at my boy, my lovely baby boy. Already striving to make it somewhere in this world."
He was never able to spend much time with her before he was forced out of his home alongside his sister. Rockston was going to harvest the planet, meaning the only way to out was through; to head to Chitara. The stellar port was noisy, aggressive, scary. Lepterans and Carcids pushed over eachother, pleading for an opportunity through and desperate to survive. He was only six years old at the time.
He watched his mother guided Euna's hand to his and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead, leading him onto the ship. Questions flooded his head as the people around him gave him looks of disgust and hatred and fear.
"Where are we going? Why is everyone so loud? Can you make them stop? Are we going to be okay?"
Euna did not answer them, only shielding him away from prying eyes with her arm. He held it tight, relying on only one answer that his mother gave before he was separated from her forever; a teary farewell with her claws cupping his face, antenna wrapped together as she begged him quietly:
"Live, my son. Live."
Chapter Two
Chitara was harsh living. Loud, rude, violent didn't even begin to scratch the surface of it. Ray and Euna were adopted by Talos and Dolores Geiger and together they lived a relatively normal life. As he got older though, he realized that the more he got older, the more he noticed the behavior of those around him.
The sneers, the glares, the words hidden behind hands, the way the other kids would treat him as they played football... he realized that no matter what he explained, what he did, what other people would do to him; everyone would take it with a grain of salt for a reason he did not know. His fists became his teachers. Whoever decided to trifle with him he returned the favor with brutal fights. He worried Euna a lot, who often had to come to his aid and promptly remind him of reality with a slap across the face and a "What were you THINKING?"
Eventually he found a calling in the cockpit, becoming a freelance pilot with teaching from an independent guild after his first job as a tour guide. He would pick up other jobs along the way such as a cargo driver, a taxi service and other menial odd jobs. he was the top of his class, excelling at any task with flying colors despite the hardships he faced. Things were turning bright, he was happy, he was finally going to make it. He was finally going to honor his mother and finally find a way to-
Dear Rayvanth Caisa-Geiger,
It is with much regret and deep sadness that we must inform you that due to your citizenship being revoked by order of the Containment of Unlicensed Biological Entities, we at Wingspan Piloting Institution must remove you from your class until you can receive proper citizenship. We apologize for this notice, may your family find solace in this tragedy.
Best of luck,
Raymond Flowro, Chairman of Wingspan Piloting Institution
Chapter Three
Ray had been fired. At an instant his entire world collapsed on him. As with many who lose their citizenship fall through the cracks of Chitara, he ended up in Tenebrae with assistance from his foster-parents to avoid C.U.B.E. deporting him back to ROI-24. Deep within Hydroponics Zone C (shortened to Hydro-C), he found himself a job in general repairs, using his knowledge on repairing commercial starships to clamber through boiling pipes, dodge steam and navigate other repairmen trying to strangle him (sometimes quite literally) out of a job. Everyday he would glance up towards the upper layers, wondering if he would ever get out of his horrible situation.
Until one day, when he was sitting on the curb after a rather brutal fight over some scraps of food, he noticed an Aurelian who had just come back from a petty heist. She sat next to him looking at the shirt he was wearing and immediately chiming in with a cheerful smile that took him by surprise.
"Hey dude, you wanna see something cool?"
From that day on, the two became nigh inseparable, and it was her who truly got him into the criminal underworld. The two were an incredibly capable duo when they were together, pulling off gigs with ease and slowly building their reputation.
Eventually, as Ray’s hybrid genetics slowly started bringing his carapace in, Ray realized that he’d need to change his approach and find a way to receive medical attention for his afflictions as soon as possible. On a fateful day, mid-shedding his carapace, he came across Lerinov while he was doing work on Chitara. After Lerinov found a way to help ease his pain, Ray provided him with manual labor and protection as a bodyguard, lovingly calling himself Lerinov’s “Goon”.
As Ray became more and more known for his gig-work within the criminal underworld, he eventually found himself within Oculus Eternum, climing the ranks with an insatiable hunger now that his goal of saving his sister became closer than ever, going so far as becoming Cyre’s personal bodyguard, being honored with the name "The Praetorian". His name was shouted by the layers below, revered as a hero for his climb to the top from such a low point in his life. Soon though, that would aim to catch up with him.
One. Last. Gig.
Chapter Four
This was it. All the blood, sweat, tears and preparation lead him up to this very moment. Right in front of him was C.U.B.E's headquarters. The big tower in the sky that threw him down below. Ray pulls this off, him and his sister are freed. All he needed to do was sneak in and out. Together with Isabella, he made his way through the building using disguises and a connection with a disgruntled higher-up provided to him by Oculus Eternum. The plan was to sneak past, forge the papers, and get out under the guise of lunch break.
Everything was according to plan. The duo snuck by with no issue and the papers were in the process of forging the papers by tampering with the machine. The two had just finished Euna's papers, bantering about what they would have for lunch when an alarm blared throughout the building.
"ALERT. INTRUDERS IN THE PROCESSING WING. INITIATING LOCKDOWN."
Dramatic exit it is.
Along with Isabella, Ray crashed through the side of C.U.B.E's headquarters, beginning a massive rooftop chase that left the media clambering in its wake. They ducked through alleyways, sprung off balconies, and slid under cars as the world chased after them; but eventually he realized the losing battle. They would be caught eventually and he was not for glory. He handed the papers to Isabella and pointed to a place to hide. He gave his last words before running right towards C.U.B.E. guns blazing.
"Take the papers to Euna. Keep her safe. Keep yourself safe."
The entire chase took about hour.
The legends say that the first five minutes were the actual chase.
The other fifty five were how long it took for C.U.B.E to bring him in.
Chapter Five
Ray was taken into custody after succumbing to critical injuries. Once fully situated, he was provided a choice: plead guilty and serve a life sentence or join the Bulwark Program, where prisoners (aptly named Bulwarks) would go to the surface of Chitara to fight off the Raid and scavenge for anything that could be used for the Hive. Allured by the promise of his sentence being cut early for good behavior, Ray took the deal and was suited up to become a Bulwark.
Ray served tirelessly, going back and forth between the surface and Chitara prison constantly to get credit in order to chisel away at his sentence. He was tasked with being a suppression operator, meaning he would be the one holding back countless raiders using explosives and heavy weaponry while his squadmates would scavenge for resources or perform tasks.
Through his plight he witnessed the horrors of the Raid in its un-propagandated form, watching it infect and claim lives with no quarter every time he resurfaced. He watched his own people turn on eachother and others fall into cultish behavior. The Bulwarks were undergeared, underprepared and undermanned and should they fail or fall in battle, they'd be injected with an experiment that would be injected into collars wrapped around their necks. In time, Ray grew into his fully-developed carapace, but his mind was completely broken.
Finally after four years Ray was to be scheduled to return back to Chitara as a new man. His suffering was finally rewarded... with his freedom denied. The head members of the program revealed that because of a failure to perform on the prisoner's part, they would all be executed for unknown means. During this period, he discovered that the Bulwark Program was nothing more than an experiment known as Project: Elixir, a joint-project between C.U.B.E. and UNITE focused on creating an artificial strain of the Raid that could be used to fight its original counterpart. Little by little, he realized that he and the other Bulwarks were just expendables being transformed into the very monsters they were fighting, and that the method of execution would be to mutate every Bulwark and release them to fight the Raid.
Scrounging up the last remaining Bulwarks, Ray incited a massive riot within Chitara prison, causing chaos while he snuck into where they were keeping the Bulwarks infected with the Elixir Strain and releasing them into the prison, creating an opening for prisoners to escape with their freedom. Unfortunately, the large presence of Elixir-Strain Raiders caused the Original Raid to storm the prison and take it over. In a last-ditch effort, Ray fought his way towards the prisons thermal-energy reactor, overcharging it and causing a prison-wide meltdown. Ray was one of the few to escape, carrying the destruction of an entire prison and the countless lives within the prison with it.
And so he left, a fresh new husk.
Chitara Prison was infamous as "The Prison of Many Faces". The entire galaxy underneath the High Stellar Council knew that if you wanted a squeaky-clean reputation, you send all your worst to rot in Chitara and never think about them again.
Reasonably, with Ray being one of the only survivors of note alongside his reputation, he was labeled a terrorist, mass murderer, arsonist... the entire catalog. His face was put up on every bounty board, on every wanted poster, everywhere. The Hybrid from Hydro-C had become a monster.
But the masses had made one simple mistake that let Ray slip away: they only had pictures from before his carapace developed, giving him the perfect opportunity to slip away and smuggle himself onto a starship headed to Locus Astra. He took up the false name of Delta: a lower-class traveling mercenary from Chitara who did gigs for money, but decided to retire after volunteering to fight the Raid, ever-so desperate to live a quiet, peaceful life.
The world has other plans.
Story Proper
Epilogue
Personality
Ray presents himself as a content and reserved, but soft spoken and polite individual. He prefers to play the support role rather than the main lead, helping others reach their goals before he focuses on his own. He will never be the type to start a conversation, but would be the type to continue and entertain one. After all he's been through, he's come to realize that he's honestly just happy to be there.
He is quite sentimental; finding solace in the peaceful lives of farm animals and the soul in toys, books, and other inanimate objects. He carries as many memories as he can with him in physical form, enjoying he thrill of collecting them and carrying them with him.
He possesses an immensely powerful will to protect the people and things he cares deeply about, which often leads him in over his head. Yet that very will strikes fear into the hearts of those who dare even procure the though of bringing harm to his cherished.
Nevertheless, he is tormented by complex post-traumatic stress disorder, formed from his prolonged exposure to violence, struggle, and the atrocities of the desperate. He manifests this in the hallucinated form of what he believes he would look like if he were to get infected by the Raid, which has named itself "Angro".
Relationships
Player Characters
Euna:
"Are we gonna be okay?"
Euna is Ray's lifeblood. The reason he even dove into the crime life in the first place. She never abandoned him throughout his childhood despite the medical complications, the harassment, the bills... she stayed through all of it. Hell, he paid the ultimate price so that she could be free.
Now on Locus Astra, Ray struggles to connect with his sister. Not because he doesn't want to, but because he feels he is tampering with things he shouldn't. He feels that she's gone a different path from him, and that he should respect it.
"Choom... I had too much Bucky's Slice choom... ouughhh fawwwk..."
Isa is Ray's best friend. The one who pulled him out of Hydro-C and into the crime world. The one he'd call to hit crazy gigs, gorge at gas stations, and do utterly ridiculous shit with. Of all the people Ray wanted to take to the CUBE heist, he wouldn't pick anyone but her. She was the only one he could trust with keeping Euna safe.
Now on Locus Astra, he wants to spend time with her as much as possible. A lot has happened in the four years since they separated. He puts incredible effort into the little moments they spend together, and is overjoyed that at least things have turned out decently well for both of them. He cannot wait for more adventures for the two to go on, and is ready to jump into any fray she gets herself into. His number one choomba.
"What's the plan, boss?"
Lerinov took Ray under his wing and brought him into the a deeper crime life that accelerated him into become a legend and saving Euna. He also taught him how to read, write, craft and cook in exchange for helping him with bodyguarding and heavy lifting. For this, Ray has become extremely loyal to Lerinov and is honored to work by his side.
Now on Locus Astra, Ray is desperate to get the study sessions back on track. He needs things to do, and he knows Lerinov has a lot for him to work on while by his side.
"I like how you think, Changeling!"
Ray and Changeling have been a dynamic goon duo working under Lerinov. He takes a great deal of care into them being alright, especially since they get into a lot of trouble. He considers himself close to them, and often had to get them out of insane situations.
Now on Locus Astra, Ray butts heads with Changeling. With so much magic and the presence of the skulk, Changeling has been tampering and sympathizing with things beyond their control and that don't have their best interests in mind. It annoys him that they have so little value to their life, yet understands their plight.
"I 'preciate you, Doc. I'll make sure you don't feel worthless."
Ray appreciates and respects the doctor. While they discussed treatments for Ray's hybrid conditions, he picked up immediately in her tone and mannerisms that she carries a heavy burden, just like him. He strives to maintain her sanity as much as possible, whether with alcohol or with stories of his times with Horace.
Sherazi has been the only person to call him out when his approach to his job as lab security crosses the line, asking him why he was so eager to do dangerous tasks. She effectively woke him up from his natural instinct to do the hardest job for the biggest reward and for that, he thanks her deeply.
"Maybe you're not so bad after all."
Voranj is one of the few people that Ray can truly relate to, which is ironic considering how they first met. Ray initially reacted with immediate violence upon encountering him, believing him to be a Raider and noting how he would always be following him around more than the other pathfinders.
Eventually Ray was talked into listening to him, and the two formed a bond over the destruction of the skulk, and then a bond beyond that, naming him "Orbit" after an old buddy of his. Ray is one of the few people to understand that despite his immense capacity for knowledge, he is still just a child when it comes to everything else. He makes an effort to help him through that.
"Damn 'Cutio!"
Ray carries immense admiration for Mercutio, and finds it very entertaining and refreshing to be allies with someone so competent. Although sometimes he thinks that her methods can be a bit more 'my way or the highway', and while he doesn't appreciate it, he understands it comes from a point of immense experience.
