"Goo goobie!" — Amaranth

Amaranth is a naive gelum who goes along with most things. They’ve always enjoyed exploring and helping others. They were often one of the first responders whenever anyone got hurt across the inner section of Singulon. Amaranth was considered to have a good bedside manner, on account of their unwavering optimism and friendliness. They don’t always understand the intricacies of complex situations & can sometimes be taken advantage of. They also have a passion for decoration. When exploring, they always make sure to keep an eye out for new materials or plants that would look good. Amaranth uses their medical skills to patch up their fellow members of Polaris after shadier jobs.

Appearance

Amaranth is a purple gelum. They wear their "hair" in a ponytail. Their typical outfit consists of black overalls and a white shirt. They usually prefer not to wear shoes, as some of their goo can ruin just about any pair they try on. When under great stress, they often change consistency, becoming more jelly-like in texture.

Amaranth found Cassandra after she crash landed at a spaceport on Singulon. More accurately, they took her into the clinic they worked at after she collapsed in a nearby alleyway. When Cass regained awareness she explained that she ran into “a bit of turbulence” due to the shifting gravity of Singulon, but couldn’t let that stop her scheduled package delivery from happening. Once the package had been safely received, Cass had dragged herself in the general direction of the clinic and allowed herself to “rest”. Amaranth saw to it that she received emergency care. Once Cass was ready to go, Amaranth found themselves asking if they could join her. The prospect of exploring the universe with their new friend was too exciting of an opportunity to pass up. Cass agreed, and led Amaranth back to where she remembered crashing her ship.

At the same time Cass collapsed, another gelum happened upon her ship. This other gelum, Enmo, was a skilled mechanic who did not hesitate to repair the ship.  The other gelum who had gotten the ship back in order also ended up joining the crew. He seemed determined not to let any more substantial harm befall the ship. Together, they became an official courier service under the name Polaris Intergalactic Shipping Services.

Polaris gained another member after what was supposed to be a routine job on Elyndra. Amaranth was set to deliver a rather heavy package addressed to a nythera named Mara. Everything was going fine until Amaranth looked for someone to sign for the package. They rang the doorbell a few times. After a few minutes, Amaranth raised their hand to knock on the door. It was already cracked open. Just beyond the entryway lay the collapsed form of Mara, who had a sizable hole in her chest. Amaranth wasted no time in getting her to the small medical bay aboard their ship. There, they were able to help Mara gain enough awareness to start speaking again. Her explanations of what happened didn't make much sense. It was decided that Mara would stay aboard for treatment while the members of Polaris continued to take jobs. Over time, Mara’s recovery progressed. Finally, the day came when she was considered ready for discharge. The crew went in to give her the good news. Mara was nowhere to be found. One of the vents in the ceiling had been wrenched open. Cass, Enmo, and Amaranth agreed to pretend that they had never found Mara. After a little while of living in the vents, Mara began to grow on the crew. Nobody directly acknowledged her presence, but they all felt that she was a valuable part of their group. After about a month, she nonchalantly came out of the vents. Amaranth felt it’d be impolite to pry about Mara’s time in the vents, so they chose not to address it. Regardless, Mara was part of the team now.

The four of them made their way to Locus Astra to set up a more permanent location for Polaris to operate out of.

Relationships

Cass: Our fearless leader! I don't know where she got the idea to make a shipping company, but I'm glad she did! And I'm glad that I was able to help her after she crashed on Singulon. I hadn't ever dealt with injuries like that before, much less on a Lepteran. I worry about her sometimes.

Enmo: He's another Gelum, like me! I think he has a rare genetic condition or something that makes him all slushy and frozen. He doesn't really talk about it. The only subject I've seen him get enthusiastic about is machines. I'm happy he'll at least answer my direct questions in between his work on the ship and factory.

Mara: She was really unexpected addition to our crew! We still don't even know her last name! Still though, she's really entertaining to be around. I never know what she'll do next! I'm relieved that I was able to help her recover from her wounds. I really didn't know what I was doing. It doesn't seem like she's planning on sustaining any more gaping holes in her chest, so hopefully I won't have to do any major surgery like that again. I do wish she'd also cut down on the time she spends trying to make a mini-me out of my goo.

Delta: someone who helped me find the anchor once I was pointed in the right direction. We ran into some skeletons on horses, but he told me to keep going while he handled them. Once I got past them, I realized it felt wrong to leave him to fight them by himself. I came back and helped him fight them off together. Later, he volunteered to help clean up sculk if our live sample in the lab got out of hand. I think he'll do a great job!

Portobello: The famous Portobello! He seems so refined. I can see why Cass speaks so highly of him. He gave me some sandwiches when I was hungry, and when I tried to give him something in return, he stopped me and said that all he wanted was "geographical intel". How generous! He also talks kinda funny. I've never heard anyone with his dialect before. Maybe it's not real. One time, I swear I heard him get really surprised by something and drop the accent for a second. It was wild. Regardless of if he's putting on a voice, I need to try some of his drinks after he gets his bar set up. Maybe Cass will have some good recommendations for me.

Sonya: She's also really nice! At first I wasn't sure if I should trust her, since she openly talks about doing crime. (Cass said that we should never make public reference to criminal activity). After talking to Sonya more, I learned that she's a pirate and also really smart with computer stuff! She said that she used to have a bigger pirate crew, but now it's just her family. Apparently she got rid of her previous crewmates because they were like 60. At first I didn't get why she had a bunch of middle school kids on her crew, but she explained that other species don't live as long, so 60 is actually really old for them. That was cool to learn, but also made me worried about my own "crew". Lepterans and Nythera are some of the more short-lived races. And Enmo worries me (despite the fact that he's also a Gelum) because I think he's kind of old. At least, he acts old. Luckily Sonya had a solution for me! She gave me a computer chip that she made. She says it can download the consciousness of one person so that they can basically live forever! I just need to make some other thingy to make the chip work. I think I'll try it out on Cass first, since she said she's "probably not living much longer with the way things are going". If it works, I'll get more chips from Sonya to preserve the rest of the crew. Who knew pirates could be this caring!

Mercutio: A ferran! He's the mayor's assistant, so he came out to greet me and Cass when we went to ask about using that big area under our storefront. Part of me wanted to chat about why he left Singulon to come to the anchor, but I didn't want to pry. I liked the tea he made for us while we waited! He seems friendly but also serious.

Orbit: puppy!!! blue puppy!! I think it likes eating the fungus. Maybe that's why its blue. Kinda like how flamingos are pink. We should just make the fungus into dog treats! Then we could easily get rid of it!
