"Checkers" is a Caelune teenager and a member of The Check Mates, a chess-themed band of scruffy outlaws on Locus Astra. Despite all her bluster, she's typically only confident with her friends, and seems primarily inspired by Western movies.

Appearance

Checkers is a Caelune with split dye hair tied into two braids. She has green eyes and small feathers on her cheeks, as well as a pair of small head wings. Her arms are her wings, which allow her to glide short distances with magical enhancements. She has a feathered avian tail and typically wears a large green poncho and a checkered bandanna around her neck. She's always wearing her cowboy hat and flight goggles, and her boots have chess piece spurs.

Checkers' feathers fluff up when they're spooked or upset.

History

Checkers avoids giving a ton of information about her past and how she came to arrive on Locus Astra with the rest of the Check Mates, simply stating they arrived by 'ship'. She has implied she has been with the Queen for a while, but not much else is truly known about her.

Personality

Checkers has the same kind of naive bluster as her fellow Check Mates, but is noticeably easier to break down than the others, often dissolving under criticism and being quite easy to scare. She's frequently willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of her fellow Check Mates.

Although painting herself as a great outlaw, Checkers' worst crimes are usually petty theft of easily-replaceable items, vandalism, and other matters of little consequence. However, she feels such things are truly the greatest tricks of an outlaw. All for the Queen!

Checkers is famously clumsy.

Relationships

Blitz

Blitz is Checkers' fellow Check Mate, and she'll do anything to secure their safety and happiness. Checkers adores her friend and often treats them like a little sibling at times. When Blitz was captured, no actual resistance was needed to hold Checkers, since she refused to leave Blitz behind regardless.

Checkers thinks of Blitz as an extremely clever inventor, seeing as Blitz can make sense of technology in ways Checkers cannot. The two also share a bond over being easily distracted by shiny things, which sometimes gets them into bad spots...

Virgo

Virgo is Checkers' fellow Check Mate. She finds them more responsible and confident than she is, and looks up to them a bit, wanting to be more like them. When it's just her and Blitz, she feels she has to step up and be more responsible, so she finds it easier when Virgo's around to take charge instead. She wants to be more like her, and sees Virgo as an older sibling. She does try to remember that Virgo likes being nicknamed 'Jester', but the nickname just isn't sticking. She's apologetic every time she forgets.

Apotheosis

It took Checkers a bit to be able to pronounce 'Apotheosis' properly, but she figured it out. Apotheosis is a strange little critter, but a Check Mate nevertheless, and Checkers finds them extremely profound. She wishes she had their 'gift for language' and is very excited whenever they seem to learn something new. However, much like Blitz, they seem to have a knack for getting into trouble, much to Checkers' dismay.

Rox

Checkers thinks Rox is pushy and mean, and dislikes their attitude towards the Queen. They especially dislike how Rox and other Pathfinders make broad assumptions about Checkers and the Check Mates, minimizing them as a group.

Delta

Checkers recognizes that Delta was the Pathfinder who seemed kindest to her and Blitz, and feels he may resonate with them the most. As a result, she prefers his company to that of other Pathfinders. Delta seems intent on looking out for her and advocated for her and Blitz's freedom during their initial capture, and she's come to appreciate him a bit more than the rest.

Mercutio

Checkers doesn't like to admit it, but Mercutio scares her and makes her extremely uncomfortable. He was the one who had Blitz by the neck for almost an hour straight, he's faster and stronger than either of them, and he was the one who dragged her into an obsidian cell and locked her in there. To her, Mercutio is a menace and a monster, despite him admittedly having never hurt her, since she feels he derives some joy out of terrorizing her.

Aris

Aris is a cop, and as far as Checkers is concerned, cops are also people who pull out weapons and put you in scary small boxes. Whenever Aris tries to talk to her, she's deliberately trying to avoid making eye contact and aiming for a convenient excuse to run off and avoid him.

Euna

Checkers doesn't not like the mayor, but also feels she is being disingenuous at times. She's met many people who put on fake smiles and politeness and Euna unfortunately reminds her of that. Especially when she shows up with Mercutio standing right behind her.

Dr. Maya Sherazi

Checkers found Dr. Sherazi gentle, but doesn't trust her very much on account of meeting her only after being hassled by so many strangers and put in an unfamiliar room for hours prior.

• Checkers doesn't really know how to use a real gun. She's never had to shoot anyone before. The most she's done is shoot toy guns. None of her friends have corrected her.
• Checkers' favorite movie would be Rango (the in-universe equivalent, of course)
• Checkers actually knows how to play chess but none of her friends believe her, so she hasn't really spoken up about it.
• Checkers can cook, and the result is edible. Kinda.
• Checkers claims the Queen gave her the checkered bandanna she wears. She made her own poncho.
• Checkers' hat and bandanna are very important to her.
